Water Leak at SMS

This morning we experienced a leak in the ceiling of one of our hallways.  The leak was contained while maintenance staff determined the location and cause.  It was determined that a sprinkler head in the ceiling broke due to the cold weather. The water to the sprinkler system was turned off to prevent flooding in the building.  During the time the sprinkler system was turned off, staff performed “fire watches” on a regular basis throughout the building to ensure student / staff safety.  This is a practice that occurs whenever building sprinkler systems are inoperable.

In the portion of the building where the leak occurred, an odor was detected.  NW Natural Gas was notified arrived on campus, and determined the odor was not natural gas and was not dangerous.

At no time were students in any danger.
