Mrs. Love’s 6th Grade Language Arts Syllabus

Course Description

Sixth grade Language Arts is an integrated approach to language built around a collection of literature, which includes a mix of genres with a variety of perspectives. The course includes writing development, grammar concepts, spelling, reading comprehension and vocabulary enhancements to ensure that students who have been achieving above grade level in Language Arts will continue to be challenged at an appropriate level.


Multiple writing assignments will be given  throughout the year and will include all components of the writing process (not limited to, but including pre-writing, drafting and editing). Short stories will also be assigned throughout the school year, as well as opportunities to improve public speaking abilities and regular weekly at-home reading.

Course Expectations

You are expected to utilize the knowledge that you have acquired in your previous Language Arts and Reading classes to help you successfully achieve proficiency of all 6th grade Language Arts standards in this course. I have set high standards and expectations for each of you as well. Therefore, your expectations of yourself and this course should be very high. I believe in you!

Quality of Work and Academic Honesty

I will give you specific guidelines concerning how your assignments are to be completed, with neatness and thoroughness-- showing all of your work throughout the process. If you fail to adhere to these guidelines, you will need to redo the assignment.

I do not tolerate cheating, and if you choose to cheat, you will receive a zero on that assignment without possibility for make-up. Cheating includes (but not limited to) giving or receiving help on a test or quiz with your classmates, copying, or allowing someone to copy your homework or other assignments.


Practice work and Summative Assessment proficiency assignments are weighted in Synergy where grades are regularly updated online. Students and parents should log-in and monitor Synergy on a regular basis.

Practice work/ homework: 20%         Quizzes and on-demand writing: 30%             Summative Assessments: 50%

Lunch Academy

Students will be assigned Lunch Academy if practice work is not completed by the due date. Lunch Academy is also used as a test taking center to complete proficiency assignments as needed.

Practice Work

I will always give time to begin practice work in class. If students need more time, it must be finished at home. It is your responsibility to complete this practice work as it will help you develop skills necessary to achieve mastery of the grade level standards. Most practice work assignments will be assigned a due date and will be expected to be turned in by that date.


Upon returning to school following an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to check my website, the class assignment planner and the extra copies basket to obtain make-up work. The student has one day for every missed to make up the work. If your family plans to be gone for an extended period of time, please arrange at least two weeks in advance with me in anticipation of work missed and I will do my best to accommodate.

Missing / Late Work

Students will have up to three days to complete homework after the due date. Any work turned in after three days from the due date will not be accepted.


Students are expected to follow ALL school and classroom rules. Failure to do so may result in an FYI, calls to parents, principal referrals, loss of privileges and/or school suspension. After three tardies, the student will receive an FYI.


In 6th grade Language Arts, students will need to come prepared daily with the following supplies:

                • Pencils with sturdy eraser
                • Black or blue pen
                • Chromebook
                • Composition notebook
                • Reading book of choice
