  • Supplemental Learning Guidance

    Staff in the district have been working to develop a plan for students to continue their learning remotely.  The Sherwood School District is excited to offer optional supplemental learning resources to support our students and families.  We will continue to update these activities and resources throughout the school closure. Please take a moment to review the information below.


    Advice for families

    • Set up a study space with the technology required 

    • Be prepared for technical issues. Teachers and staff will be trained on these platforms during professional development on March 30th and 31st and will be ready to help support families with troubleshooting starting on April 1st.

    • Review and orient yourself with the following platforms we will use to support online learning:  Seesaw, Google Classroom (if you have an elementary student) and/or Canvas (if you have a middle or high school student).

    • Discuss your expectations with your child(ren) 

      • Agree on any incentives or consequences

      • Reinforce that this at-home learning is as important as traditional

      • Talk about the routine for working and checking their Seesaw, Google Classroom, or Canvas daily

    • You will likely need to monitor this at first. Check-in with them or do it with them until they are ready to be independent. 

    • Help your student maintain a regular study schedule.

    • Please know that if district staff use off-site phones to contact families, the caller ID may look unfamiliar or read “Restricted.” Please be sure to answer incoming calls and check voicemail from unknown numbers.


    Elementary Level

    Beginning April 1st, optional resources will be posted to our website; your child’s teacher will also send an email with specifics regarding review and enrichment within their own classroom. 


    Beginning April 6th, elementary teachers will be communicating with families through email and two different platforms designed to facilitate online learning (Seesaw for grades K-2, Google Classroom for grades 3-5). Please know that at the elementary level we are waiting to roll out these platforms until April 6th, so we can ensure all students and families have the technology they need to participate in these activities if they choose. 


    Middle Level

    Beginning April 1st, optional resources will be posted online to Canvas for all students to see.  Be sure to check out the Calendar in Canvas for the supplemental activities and resources. If you’d like to observe your student’s Canvas content, please ensure you’ve registered for a Canvas Parent account - here is a link to instructions. Email your school’s registrar if you would like support with account creation.


    High School Level

    Beginning April 1st, students will be able to access supplemental learning opportunities via their third-trimester Canvas courses.  Please remind students to check Canvas frequently and to engage with the learning as much as possible. If you would like to observe your student’s Canvas content, please ensure you have registered for a Canvas Parent account - here is a link to instructions.  Please email our registrar if you would like support with account creation:


    We are excited to begin the rollout of our plan to provide learning opportunities to our families and students.  This is the first phase of our rollout, which will evolve as we learn together to use these new tools and keep our kids learning while our schools are closed.

  • Services Available During Closure

    As we shared with you earlier this morning, all Oregon schools will be closed March 16-31, with students returning to school on Wednesday, April 1. While our schools will be closed, including school offices, our District Office departments will remain in operation.  Additionally, the following services will be available to students and families:


    • Nutrition Services will operate food distribution hubs at Hopkins Elementary and Edy Ridge Elementary March 16-20, and March 30-31.  Breakfast and lunch will be available to all students, at no cost, at the following times:

      • Breakfast - 7:30-8:30am

      • Lunch - 11:30am-12:30pm

    Meals will be pick-up only (no students will remain on campus to eat). At Hopkins, pick-up will happen at the cafeteria entrance -- please look for the pop-up canopies.  At Edy Ridge, pick-up will happen at the front entrance.


    • Champions will provide a backup source of childcare during the closure.  This program is open to all Sherwood Students age 5-12, whose families have immediate care needs (healthcare workers, first responders, no back-up care available). The schedule for Champions will start on Tuesday, March 17, to allow for facility sanitation and registration processing on Monday, March 16.

      • Schedule: Tuesday March 17-Friday March 27 (closed Saturday/Sunday)

      • Time: 7:30am-5:30pm

      • Location: Hopkins Elementary multi-purpose room

      • Cost: $39/day

      • Single serve snacks will be provided; please plan to bring a sack lunch

    • SHARE Center will be open daily 9:00-11:00am and 1:00-3:00pm, March 16-20 and March 30-31. Our SHARE Center is located at the Sherwood Middle School campus, in the parking lot portables.  SHARE Center staff will also be on-site at our Nutrition Services meal distribution hubs during breakfast and lunch (see times above).     • Families who participate in our Weekly Backpack Program can pick up their backpacks at the SHARE Center on Friday, March 20, in order to have them over Spring Break. (see hours above).

     

    We have received questions from parents/guardians/community members about where to direct donations of food or funds to assist students and families in need.  We encourage those individuals who want to contribute in this way, to contact our SHARE Center at 503-825-5480. The SHARE Center can accept gift cards (Walmart, Safeway, Target, etc.), new and gently used clothing, school supplies, diapers/wipes, basic necessities and monetary donations. 


    The events and circumstances we all are experiencing are unprecedented. As we continue to maneuver through the ever-changing landscape, please remember to take care of yourselves and look out for others.  Many emotions and reactions arise in response to the current reality — please be kind and thoughtful, and extend grace and compassion to others.
